Wait, how?
Wait, how? Everyday things, explained properly
Short, sourced explanations of things people keep wondering about. Each one answers the question first, then shows where the next questions lead.
- Wait, how?How does a chatbot pick the next word?It doesn't write the answer and then show it to you. It writes one piece, reads everything again, and rolls loaded dice for the next one.
- Wait, how?How does Wi-Fi carry data on radio waves?Same kind of radio wave as your microwave oven, at a tiny fraction of the power. The trick is how many bits it packs into every wiggle.
- Wait, how?How does your phone know which way is up?Not GPS, and not magic. A speck of silicon on springs gets pulled sideways, and the chip measures how far it moved.
- Wait, how?How did someone fit a computer inside a language model?Nobody trained it. A compiler set every weight of the new layers, and the model's own memory state became the RAM.
- Wait, how?Why does spilled coffee leave a ring? The ring isn't where the coffee was. It's where a hidden current inside the drop delivered it.
- Wait, how? What causes brain freeze?Nothing in your head freezes. The cold stays in your mouth, and the pain shows up somewhere else.
- Wait, how?Where does a photo actually go when you back it up to the cloud? Not one copy on one computer somewhere. More like a shredded, encrypted jigsaw with a very good index.
- Wait, how?How does GPS know where you are?Your phone never talks to the satellites. It listens very carefully to clocks in the sky and does the geometry itself.
- Wait, how?How do noise-cancelling headphones work? They fight sound with sound, and they are much better at it with some sounds than others.
- Wait, how?How do planes stay up?A wing is a machine for bending air. The pressure story and the push-air-down story are the same story told two ways.
- Wait, how?How do QR codes work?A QR code is a small, self-repairing message, designed in the 1990s to be read fast off a dirty factory part.
- Wait, how?How do tides work? The Moon doesn't lift the sea. It pulls unevenly on the whole planet, and the oceans stretch.
- Wait, how?Why does the same note sound different on a piano and a guitar? Both instruments play nearly the same set of frequencies. The recipe and the timing are what differ.
- Wait, how? What do bees see that you can't?Their three colour channels sit further toward the violet end than ours, and plenty of flowers are painted for that view.
- Wait, how?Why does bread rise?Yeast is the pump, gluten is the balloon, and the oven gets the final word.
- Wait, how?Why do stars twinkle but planets mostly don't?It comes down to size. Not how big the object is, but how big it looks.
